Officially, Doctor Odyssey, the would-be successful highway-to-the-sky ABC medical drama, has been canceled and will not be returning to air, at least on the original network.
It was actually made a reality on Monday, June 30 when the cast contracts on the show expired and sealed the fate of the series at ABC in a quiet fashion. Though no official cancellation announcement has been made by the network, the lapse of contracts of actors indicates that the run of the cast, including Joshua Jackson, Don Johnson, Phillipa Soo, and Sean Teale, is over under the ABC banner.
However, the hope is not lost yet by the fans of the show. It is reported that the series produced by Ryan Murphy might still be taken by another streaming platform or TV network, leaving the possibility of reviving a second season.
A Nonconformist Healthcare Drama
Doctor Odyssey, which premiered in September 2024, tracked a team of top-notch doctors providing life-and-death services aboard a cutting-edge cruise ship. It was a dramatic person story mixed with unrealistic rescue operations at sea, basically, Grey s Anatomy meets The Love Boat with a Ryan Murphy touch to it.
Jackson was Dr. Max Bankman a multifaceted lead physician who had a dark past. Character acting: Soo played a character, Avery, who was engaged in a romantic tug-of-war among Max and Tristan (Teale), and Don Johnson as Captain Massey was basically in charge of the whole ship with old-school authority and charm.
It earned a small but dedicated following, and the show was noted not only because of its dramatic love triangle, but also due to its surreal atmosphere and fan theories such as an idea that claimed that the entire show was a fever dream perpetrated by Max in a coma.
The Cliffhanger Ending
The first season ended on May 15 and answered some questions, as well as generated new ones. Following months of emotional torture, Avery revealed her affection to Max, and picked him instead of Tristan in a very touching scene, which also foreshadowed significant shifts in her life, i.e., wishing to go back to medical school and keeping the relationship with Max.
Max reacted by being supportive and positive to Avery, saying that they will work it out together.
In the meantime, Max and Tristan as well had a bro-to-bro reunion, as Max took responsibility and apologized to Tristan on having broken boundaries in their love relationship to Avery. It was a vulnerable moment that offered hope to the fans that all the three characters will now go on in peace.
But possibly the greatest question–Was any of it real?–was unanswered.
Ever since the premiere of the series, there had been speculation and fan theories that Max, who was once called a patient zero during the COVID pandemic, was simply never cured, and that the cruise ship was a mere part of an elaborate hallucination or a dream created during a coma.
Even Jackson admitted to the theory saying:
I adore this theory… I do not know what goes on in the mind of Ryan Murphy, but we also were having an equivalent theory working on set. It was only up to Ryan Murphy.”
The Reason It Was Canceled.
It appears logistics over ratings determined the future of the show.
Deadline reports the cast contracts officially lapsed June 30. Until Season 2 was renewed there was no such contract and therefore ABC allowed those contracts to expire essentially relieving the actors of their obligations and leaving the fate of Doctor Odyssey in a state of flux.
Nevertheless, it should be mentioned that ABC has not yet publicly announced a cancellation as permanent, leaving a possibility of revival on a different network or streaming platform.
Due to the fact that Doctor Odyssey was funded by Ryan Murphy who currently has partnerships with Disney, Netflix, and FX, there is an idea that the show might reappear somewhere in case the appropriate agreement will be reached.
Streaming media has a reputation of reviving popular shows, in particular, with a buzzed-about final season or an active fandom on the internet. Intrigue and fans are what Doctor Odyssey has to offer.
What is Next in the Cast and Crew?
The gifted cast will easily find other projects unless a Season 2 chance is found in the near future.

Ryan Murphy, meanwhile, is too busy with other productions in other media. It is not yet clear whether he has time- or even interest- to revisit Doctor Odyssey, but one thing that fans can be sure of is that he cannot and will not be ruled out.

Others were annoyed that again they had more of an interesting drama left hanging on the peg with no conclusion at all, something that is quite common in the modern high paced television environment.
